Why Barcelona is different

Mediterranean climate, modernista grid, and Catalan craft

Barcelona rooftops sit between the Mediterranean Sea and the Collserola foothills, in a climate that is among the most generous in Europe for outdoor living. Eixample's modernista grid creates a city of orderly terrazas; Pedralbes and Sarrià offer hillside villas with sea-and-mountain panorama. Building consent runs through the Ajuntament de Barcelona and COAC-registered architects.

We work in this tension daily: with Catalan architects, structural engineers and licensing consultants, and with the lifestyle expectations of Barcelona clients shaped by Mediterranean tradition and international design culture. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, Mediterranean curation, and the wellness elements (pool deck, outdoor kitchen, spa) that turn a Barcelona roof into a year-round sanctuary.

Our Barcelona approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation and dramatically reduce irrigation demand.
  • Mediterranean palette – evergreen structure (olive, citrus, holm oak, Italian cypress), aromatic accents (lavender, rosemary, salvia, sage), sculptural specimens (Phoenix, agave, bougainvillea, jasmine).
  • Wellness architecture – pool deck, spa, sauna and outdoor kitchen integration with shade pergolas and microclimate cooling.
  • Regulation-aware execution – COAC-registered Catalan architects, Ajuntament licencia where required, salt- and wind-resilient material specification.

Areas we serve

How a Barcelona project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (sun path, salt exposure, structure, water).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.

  3. 03

    Engineering and consent

Load calculations with structural engineer, COAC-registered architectural sign-off, licencia where required, coordination with the building's architect and interior designer.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from Spanish nurseries and pre-conditioned for the project's microclimate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Barcelona?
Yes. Most of our Barcelona work is Eixample penthouse terrazas, Pedralbes and Sarrià villas, Diagonal Mar high-rise penthouses and waterfront residences in Castelldefels.
How do you handle the Mediterranean climate?
With a drought-adapted Mediterranean palette, mycorrhizal soil partnerships that reduce irrigation demand, shade pergolas, and material specification that handles salt-laden sea air.
How long does a typical Barcelona project take?
Between three and ten months from first conversation to handover. Larger villas with wellness architecture often need six to twelve months of planning.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
