Why Bordeaux is different

UNESCO Port de la Lune, the wine-estate tradition, and the rhythm of the Garonne

Bordeaux is one of the few cities where the entire historic centre is UNESCO-protected as Port de la Lune. The Le Triangle d'Or hôtel-particulier tradition, the Chartrons négociant heritage, and the surrounding Médoc, Pessac-Léognan and Saint-Émilion wine-estate aristocracy set the lifestyle baseline. Climate is oceanic-temperate moderated by the Atlantic – warm humid summers, mild wet winters, intense maritime humidity, Atlantic storm fronts.

We work in this tension daily: with HMONP-licensed Ordre des Architectes architects and structural engineers, with Bordeaux Métropole permitting and ABF heritage consultants, and with the lifestyle expectations of Bordeaux clients between Triangle d'Or hôtels particuliers, Chartrons residences, Caudéran and Le Bouscat villas, Médoc and Pessac-Léognan châteaux, Saint-Émilion vineyard properties, and Bassin d'Arcachon / Cap Ferret coastal villas. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, oceanic-Atlantic curation, and the wellness elements (loggia, outdoor kitchen, dining terrace, pergola) that turn a Bordeaux rooftop into a year-round sanctuary.

Our Bordeaux approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation under Atlantic humidity and mild winters.
  • Oceanic-Atlantic palette – structural specimens (oak, beech, hornbeam, magnolia, citrus), Atlantic-tolerant evergreens (camellia, hydrangea, rhododendron, boxwood), flowering accents (jasmine, wisteria, rose, peony), Mediterranean accents, vine and espalier traditions.
  • Wellness architecture – loggia, outdoor kitchen, dining terrace and pergola integration with Garonne, vineyard or Bassin d'Arcachon framing.
  • UNESCO-aware execution – HMONP-licensed Ordre des Architectes architects and structural engineers, Bordeaux Métropole permitting, ABF Port de la Lune heritage review.

How a Bordeaux project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (Bordeaux Métropole, ABF UNESCO, Atlantic humidity, structure).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.

  3. 03

    Engineering and approvals

Load calculations with French-licensed structural engineer, Bordeaux Métropole permitting, ABF heritage consent for Port de la Lune UNESCO zone.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from Nouvelle-Aquitaine nurseries and pre-conditioned for the Bordeaux climate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.
