Rooftop Terrace Design · Boston
From Back Bay to Wellesley
Berlin-based manufactory delivering rooftop terrace concepts to Boston's most discerning brownstone roof gardens, federal-period rooftops and suburban estates, with plant design, outdoor kitchens and wellness architecture under one curatorial hand.

Why Boston is different
New England winters, federal heritage, and academic culture
Boston rooftops sit in a climate that tests every detail. Harsh humid-continental winters with frequent below-freezing periods, occasional nor'easter snow events, hot humid summers and salt-laden ocean air along the harbour. Back Bay and Beacon Hill carry strict historic district restrictions; Cambridge homes a research-leadership culture from Harvard and MIT. Building consent runs through Boston ISD and the Boston Landmarks Commission.
We work in this tension daily: with Massachusetts-licensed structural engineers and landscape architects, with ISD expediters and Landmarks consultants, and with the lifestyle expectations of clients between Back Bay brownstones, Cambridge residences and suburban estates in Brookline, Wellesley and Weston. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, ultra-hardy curation, and the wellness elements (spa, sauna, outdoor kitchen) that turn a Boston roof into a year-round sanctuary.

Our Boston approach
Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration
- Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation.
- Ultra-hardy New England palette – evergreen structure (yew, dwarf pine, juniper, holly), four-season layers (Japanese maple, oakleaf hydrangea, witch hazel), New England natives (mountain laurel, sweetfern, blueberry), resilient climbers.
- Wellness architecture – spa, sauna and outdoor kitchen integration with harbour or Common framing. Winter-protected systems.
- Heritage-aware execution – Massachusetts-licensed structural engineers, ISD permitting via expediters, Boston Landmarks Commission consultation.
Areas we serve
Across the city and the western suburbs
Most of our Boston work is concentrated in Back Bay and Beacon Hill brownstones, Cambridge residences and suburban estates. We also handle select hospitality projects.
How a Boston project unfolds
From first conversation to handover
- 01
Understanding before drawing
Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (winter exposure, historic district, structure, salt).
- 02
Concept and curation
A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.
- 03
Engineering and permitting
Load calculations with Massachusetts-licensed structural engineer, ISD permitting via expediter, Boston Landmarks Commission consultation where required.
- 04
Installation and handover
Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from New England nurseries and pre-conditioned for the climate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.
Frequently asked
What clients usually want to know first
- Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Boston?
- Yes. Most of our Boston work is Back Bay brownstone roof gardens, Beacon Hill federal-period rooftops, Cambridge residences, Seaport penthouses and suburban estates in Brookline, Newton, Wellesley and Weston.
- How do you handle New England winters?
- With ultra-hardy plant material, frost-proof substrate composition, winter protection systems where required, and materials specified for freeze-thaw cycles and nor'easter loads.
- How long does a typical Boston project take?
- Between four and twelve months from first conversation to handover. Larger Back Bay or suburban estates with wellness architecture often need eight to fourteen months of planning.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
