Rooftop Terrace Design · Edinburgh
From the New Town to Murrayfield
Berlin-based manufactory delivering rooftop terrace concepts to Edinburgh's most discerning Georgian-terrace roof gardens and villa rooftops, with plant design, outdoor kitchens and wellness architecture under one curatorial hand.

Why Edinburgh is different
Georgian heritage, oceanic climate, and UNESCO New Town
Edinburgh rooftops sit above one of the most strictly preserved Georgian cityscapes in Europe. The UNESCO-protected New Town and Old Town carry rigorous Historic Environment Scotland consent rules; the climate is cool oceanic with frequent strong westerly winds from the Atlantic, over 700mm annual rainfall, cool short summers and occasional haar sea fog. Every project becomes a negotiation between Georgian discipline and contemporary lifestyle.
We work in this tension daily: with RIBA/RIAS-registered Scottish architects and structural engineers, with HES consultants and Edinburgh planning officers, and with the lifestyle expectations of Edinburgh clients between New Town Georgian houses, Stockbridge townhouses and Murrayfield estates. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, oceanic-Scottish curation, and the wellness elements (spa, sauna, outdoor kitchen) that turn an Edinburgh roof into a year-round sanctuary above the Castle.

Our Edinburgh approach
Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration
- Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation.
- Oceanic-Scottish palette – evergreen structure (yew, holly, Scots pine, boxwood), Scottish-influenced natives (rowan, silver birch, heather, ferns, bilberry), seasonal layers (rhododendron, hydrangea, Japanese maple).
- Wellness architecture – spa, sauna and outdoor kitchen integration with Castle and Forth framing.
- Heritage-aware execution – RIBA/RIAS-registered architects, Scottish-licensed structural engineers, City of Edinburgh Council planning, Historic Environment Scotland consent.
Areas we serve
Across Edinburgh and the Lothians
Most of our Edinburgh work is concentrated in New Town Georgian terraces, Stockbridge townhouses and Murrayfield estates. We also handle select hospitality projects.
How an Edinburgh project unfolds
From first conversation to handover
- 01
Understanding before drawing
Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (wind, rainfall, listed-building consent, structure).
- 02
Concept and curation
A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.
- 03
Engineering and consent
Load calculations with Scottish-licensed structural engineer, City of Edinburgh Council planning, Historic Environment Scotland consultation in the UNESCO zone.
- 04
Installation and handover
Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from Scottish and Pacific-Northwest-adjacent nurseries and pre-conditioned for the climate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.
Frequently asked
What clients usually want to know first
- Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Edinburgh?
- Yes. Most of our Edinburgh work is New Town Georgian-terrace roof gardens, Stockbridge and Trinity townhouses, Morningside and The Grange villas, and Murrayfield and Barnton estates.
- How do you handle listed-building consent?
- With early Historic Environment Scotland consultation, RIBA/RIAS-registered architectural sign-off, and material specification that respects the Georgian silhouette of the New Town.
- How long does a typical Edinburgh project take?
- Between four and twelve months from first conversation to handover. Larger Georgian roof gardens with listed-building consent often need eight to fourteen months of planning.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
