Why Lisbon is different

Atlantic-Mediterranean light, Pombaline heritage, and the Tagus

Lisbon rooftops sit between the Atlantic and the Tagus, in a climate that is gentler than the central Mediterranean and more luminous than northern Europe. Hot dry summers, mild wet winters, intense Atlantic UV, salt-laden ocean air, occasional nortada wind events. The Pombaline reconstruction of the Baixa is heritage-protected; Chiado and Belém carry their own design constraints under IGESPAR/DGPC consent.

We work in this tension daily: with Portuguese-licensed architects and structural engineers, with Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and heritage consultants, and with the lifestyle expectations of Lisbon clients between Chiado penthouses, Lapa palace residences and Cascais coastal estates. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, Atlantic-Mediterranean curation, and the wellness elements (pool deck, outdoor kitchen, spa) that turn a Lisbon roof into a year-round sanctuary above the Tagus.

Our Lisbon approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation and reduce irrigation demand.
  • Atlantic-Mediterranean palette – evergreen structure (olive, citrus, cork oak, holm oak, Italian cypress), aromatic accents (lavender, rosemary, sage, jasmine), sculptural specimens (Phoenix, agave, bougainvillea, jacaranda).
  • Wellness architecture – pool deck, spa and outdoor kitchen integration with Tagus and Atlantic framing.
  • Heritage-aware execution – Portuguese-licensed architects and structural engineers, Câmara Municipal de Lisboa permitting, IGESPAR/DGPC consultation in heritage zones.

How a Lisbon project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (Atlantic salt, sun path, heritage, structure).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.

  3. 03

    Engineering and permitting

Load calculations with Portuguese-licensed structural engineer, Câmara Municipal permitting, IGESPAR/DGPC consultation in heritage zones.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from Portuguese and Iberian nurseries and pre-conditioned for the climate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Lisbon?
Yes. Most of our Lisbon work is Chiado and Príncipe Real penthouses, Lapa and Estrela palace-residence rooftops, Restelo and Alvalade villas, plus Atlantic-coast estates in Estoril, Cascais and Sintra.
How do you handle Atlantic exposure?
With salt-tolerant Atlantic-Mediterranean plant material, UV-stable material specification and irrigation engineered for the dry summer envelope.
How long does a typical Lisbon project take?
Between three and ten months from first conversation to handover. Larger palace-residence rooftops with wellness architecture often need six to twelve months of planning.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
