Why London is different

A maritime climate, a heritage city, and the highest standards

London rooftops are unlike any other European city. The maritime climate gives a longer growing season and a wider plant palette than central Europe – olive, wisteria, and Japanese maple thrive where Berlin's winters would damage them. But the city is also defined by heritage buildings, conservation areas, and structural limits that make every project a careful negotiation between ambition and constraint.

We work in this tension daily: with architects who understand RIBA stages, with planning consultants who navigate Westminster and Kensington consent, and with structural engineers who know what a Victorian roof can hold. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, curated composition, and the wellness elements (whirlpool, sauna, outdoor kitchen) that turn a roof into a sanctuary.

Our London approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation. Plants stay healthy for decades.
  • Curated plant palette – evergreen structure (yew, boxwood, holly), Mediterranean accents (olive, lavender, rosemary), dramatic seasonal layers (Japanese maple, ornamental grasses, wisteria).
  • Wellness architecture – whirlpool, sauna and outdoor kitchen integration on tight rooftop geometries. Acoustic privacy through living screens.
  • Heritage-aware execution – load calculations with structural engineers, planning consent navigation in conservation areas, listed building constraints.

Areas we serve

Across central and west London

Most of our London work is concentrated in residential boroughs with high penthouse density and conservation-area complexity. We also handle hospitality projects in central locations.

How a London project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (planning, structure, wind exposure).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality – never a single take-it-or-leave-it.

  3. 03

    Engineering and consent

Load calculations with structural engineer, planning pre-app where needed, coordination with the building's architect and interior designer.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks, depending on complexity. Plants are pre-conditioned in our Berlin nursery. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in London?
Yes. Most of our London work is residential penthouses and townhouse roof gardens across Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Belgravia, Notting Hill, Marylebone, Hampstead and Canary Wharf. Hospitality projects are handled separately.
How do you handle London-specific challenges?
We collaborate with structural engineers and planning consultants, select wind- and humidity-tolerant plant material, and adapt wellness elements to each site's constraints – including listed building and conservation area requirements.
How long does a typical London project take?
Between three and nine months from first conversation to handover. Larger penthouse projects with wellness architecture often need six to twelve months of planning.
