Rooftop Terrace Design · Los Angeles
From Beverly Hills to Malibu
Berlin-based manufactory delivering rooftop terrace concepts to LA's most discerning hillside estates and beachfront residences, with plant design, outdoor kitchens and wellness architecture under one curatorial hand.
Why Los Angeles is different
Mediterranean climate, fire zones, and the discipline of water
Los Angeles rooftops sit in a paradoxical landscape: a Mediterranean-arid climate that opens one of the richest plant palettes in the Northern Hemisphere, set against wildfire risk, Santa Ana wind events, seismic design requirements and ongoing water restrictions. Hillside estates in Bel Air, beachfront villas in Malibu and modernist penthouses in West Hollywood each operate under different microclimates and different regulatory pressures.
We work in this tension daily: with California-licensed structural engineers, landscape architects with LADBS experience, and the lifestyle expectations of clients who treat their roof and terrace as the primary living space ten months of the year. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, drought-adapted curation, and the wellness elements (pool deck, outdoor kitchen, spa, sauna) that turn an LA roof into a year-round sanctuary.
Our Los Angeles approach
Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration
- Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation and dramatically reduce irrigation demand.
- Mediterranean and native palette – evergreen structure (olive, citrus, holm oak, California live oak), aromatic accents (lavender, rosemary, sage), succulents (agave, aloe, dudleya), sculptural specimens (Phoenix, bird of paradise).
- Wellness architecture – pool deck, spa, sauna and outdoor kitchen integration with ocean and canyon views. Acoustic privacy through living screens.
- Regulation-aware execution – California-licensed structural engineers, LADBS permitting via expediters, seismic and fire-zone consultation.
Areas we serve
Across the Westside, Hills and Coast
Most of our Los Angeles work is concentrated in hillside estates, beachfront villas and modernist penthouses. We also handle select hospitality projects.
How an LA project unfolds
From first conversation to handover
- 01
Understanding before drawing
Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (sun path, fire zone, seismic, structure, water).
- 02
Concept and curation
A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality – never a single take-it-or-leave-it.
- 03
Engineering and permitting
Load calculations with California-licensed structural engineer, LADBS permitting via expediter, fire-zone and seismic consultation where required.
- 04
Installation and handover
Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from California nurseries and pre-conditioned for the project's microclimate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.
Frequently asked
What clients usually want to know first
- Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Los Angeles?
- Yes. Most of our LA work is hillside estates, beachfront villas and modernist penthouses across Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu, Hollywood Hills, Pacific Palisades and Brentwood.
- How do you handle California water and fire constraints?
- With drought- and fire-resilient plant material, mycorrhizal soil partnerships that significantly reduce irrigation demand, and substrate composition designed for the LA fire and seismic envelope.
- How long does a typical LA project take?
- Between four and twelve months from first conversation to handover. Larger hillside estates and Malibu villas with wellness architecture often need eight to fourteen months of planning.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
