Rooftop Terrace Design · Lugano
From Castagnola to Ascona
Berlin-based manufactory delivering rooftop terrace concepts to Lugano's most discerning lakefront villas and Ticino-lakes hillside estates, with plant design, outdoor kitchens and wellness architecture under one curatorial hand.

Why Lugano is different
Italian-speaking Switzerland, Insubrian humidity, and the lake-villa tradition
Lugano is the Italian-speaking Swiss financial centre on the Insubrian lakes – Lago di Lugano and, further north, Lago Maggiore (Locarno, Ascona). Castagnola, Paradiso, Montagnola and Ruvigliana set the historic HNWI lakefront and hillside lifestyle; Morcote and Gandria preserve the protected heritage villages; Brè-Aldesago anchors the panoramic mountain ridge. Climate is humid subtropical with hot humid summers, mild humid winters, Alpine UV at altitude, foehn wind events, and significant Alpine-lake precipitation. The Cantone Ticino and Comuni-level authorities govern building and lake preservation.
We work in this tension daily: with SIA-OTIA-registered architects and structural engineers, with Città di Lugano Ufficio Tecnico, Cantone and Comuni permitting consultants, and with the lifestyle expectations of Lugano clients between Castagnola lakefront villas, Paradiso, Montagnola and Ruvigliana hillside estates, Morcote and Gandria heritage villages, Brè-Aldesago panoramic rooftops, and Locarno and Ascona Lake Maggiore estates. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, Insubrian-Alpine curation, and the wellness elements (sunset terrace, outdoor kitchen, pool deck, pergola) that turn a Lugano rooftop into a year-round sanctuary.

Our Lugano approach
Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration
- Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation under Insubrian humidity and Alpine UV.
- Insubrian-Alpine palette – structural specimens (sweet chestnut, beech, cypress, magnolia, citrus, palms), Insubrian evergreens (camellia, azalea, oleander, bay laurel), flowering accents (rhododendron, hydrangea, jasmine, wisteria, hibiscus), Mediterranean accents, Ticino lake-garden plants.
- Wellness architecture – sunset terrace, outdoor kitchen, pool deck and pergola integration with lake or Alpine framing.
- Lake-preservation-aware execution – SIA-OTIA architects and structural engineers, Città di Lugano Ufficio Tecnico permitting, ISOS Federal heritage-inventory consent, lake-preservation runoff compliance.
Areas we serve
Across the Ticino lakes and the Insubrian region
Most of our Lugano work is concentrated in Castagnola, Paradiso, Montagnola, Ruvigliana, Morcote, Brè-Aldesago, Gandria, Locarno and Ascona. We also handle select Como-corridor and Lago Maggiore Italian-side projects.
How a Lugano project unfolds
From first conversation to handover
- 01
Understanding before drawing
Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (Ufficio Tecnico, Cantone Ticino, ISOS, lake-preservation, structure).
- 02
Concept and curation
A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.
- 03
Engineering and approvals
Load calculations with SIA-OTIA structural engineer, Città di Lugano Ufficio Tecnico permitting, Cantone Ticino review, ISOS heritage consent for Morcote/Gandria.
- 04
Installation and handover
Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from Insubrian nurseries and pre-conditioned for the Ticino climate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.
Frequently asked
What clients usually want to know first
- Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Lugano?
- Yes. Most of our Lugano work is Castagnola, Paradiso, Montagnola, Ruvigliana, Morcote, Brè-Aldesago, plus Locarno and Ascona Lake Maggiore estates.
- How do you handle Ticino-lake preservation?
- With closed-loop irrigation, organic-only substrate, low-nutrient-leach planter design, and ISOS Federal heritage-inventory-compatible detailing for protected lake villages.
- How long does a typical Lugano project take?
- Between five and fourteen months from first conversation to handover. Larger Castagnola or Morcote lakefront estates often need eight to fourteen months of planning.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
