Why Marrakech is different

Riad tradition, desert heat, and the Atlas backdrop

Marrakech rooftops sit at the edge of the Sahara, framed by the Atlas Mountains. The climate is hot semi-arid – very hot dry summers above 40°C, mild winters with cold desert nights, intense UV, occasional chergui sirocco events bringing Saharan dust. The riad-garden tradition shapes the lifestyle baseline: enclosed courtyards with citrus and water features, accessed from rooftop terraces that connect the interior to the Atlas horizon.

We work in this tension daily: with Moroccan-registered architects (Ordre National des Architectes) and structural engineers, with Inspection des Monuments Historiques consultants for the UNESCO Medina, and with the lifestyle expectations of Marrakech clients between Medina riads, Palmeraie villas, Amelkis golf estates and Atlas-facing hillside homes. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, Maghreb-Mediterranean curation, and the wellness elements (pool deck, outdoor kitchen, hammam-adjacent terraces) that turn a Marrakech rooftop into a year-round sanctuary.

Our Marrakech approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships dramatically reduce water demand and replace chemical fertilisation in the Marrakech water envelope.
  • Maghreb-Mediterranean palette – evergreen structure (olive, citrus, fig, pomegranate, date palm), aromatic accents (jasmine, rose, mint, lavender, rosemary), sculptural specimens (Phoenix, agave, cactus, bougainvillea), riad-garden elements.
  • Wellness architecture – pool deck, hammam-adjacent terrace and outdoor kitchen integration with Atlas framing and microclimate cooling.
  • Heritage-aware execution – Moroccan-registered architects (ONA) and structural engineers, Commune de Marrakech permitting, Inspection des Monuments Historiques consultation in the UNESCO Medina.

How a Marrakech project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (heat, chergui, water, UNESCO).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.

  3. 03

    Engineering and consent

Load calculations with structural engineer, ONA architectural sign-off, Commune de Marrakech permitting, Inspection des Monuments Historiques consultation in the UNESCO Medina.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from Moroccan and Mediterranean nurseries and pre-conditioned for the Marrakech climate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Marrakech?
Yes. Most of our Marrakech work is Medina riad rooftops, Palmeraie villa estates, Hivernage penthouses, Amelkis and Targa golf-course residences, and Route de l\'Ourika hillside homes facing the Atlas.
How do you handle the desert climate?
With a Maghreb-Mediterranean drought-adapted palette, mycorrhizal soil partnerships that dramatically reduce water demand, shade pergolas, riad-tradition water features and material specification for desert heat and dust.
How long does a typical Marrakech project take?
Between four and ten months from first conversation to handover. Larger Palmeraie or Amelkis villa rooftops with heritage consent often need six to twelve months of planning.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
