Why Milan is different

Design capital, palazzo heritage, and continental seasonality

Milan is the design capital of Italy and one of the great design cities of the world. Every project carries the implicit expectation of being part of a continuous design tradition. The climate is humid continental – hot summers, cold winters, the famous Lombardy fog – which sets the plant envelope. And the regulatory regime includes Soprintendenza heritage consent in protected zones, on top of standard SCIA and CILA submissions.

We work in this tension daily: with Italian architects who shape the global design conversation, with structural engineers and Soprintendenza consultants, and with the lifestyle expectations of clients who already live inside one of the world's most discerning design cultures. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, curated Mediterranean-continental composition, and the wellness elements (spa, outdoor kitchen, sauna) that turn a Milan roof into a year-round sanctuary.

Our Milan approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation.
  • Mediterranean-continental palette – evergreen structure (olive, boxwood, yew, holm oak), seasonal layers (Japanese maple, hydrangea, wisteria, jasmine), aromatic accents (lavender, rosemary, citrus in protected pots).
  • Wellness architecture – spa, sauna and outdoor kitchen integration on tight palazzo geometries.
  • Heritage-aware execution – load calculations with structural engineers, Soprintendenza consultation in protected zones, SCIA and CILA submissions where required.

How a Milan project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (heritage zone, structure, sun path, microclimate).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.

  3. 03

    Engineering and consent

Load calculations with structural engineer, Soprintendenza consultation in heritage zones, SCIA/CILA submissions where required, coordination with the building's architect and interior designer.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from Italian nurseries and pre-conditioned for the project's microclimate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Milan?
Yes. Most of our Milan work is penthouse residences and palazzo roof terraces across Brera, Quadrilatero della Moda, Porta Nuova, Magenta, Porta Romana, Citylife and Garibaldi.
How do you handle heritage zone consent?
With Soprintendenza consultation in protected zones, SCIA and CILA submissions where required, and material specification that respects the palazzo silhouette.
How long does a typical Milan project take?
Between three and ten months from first conversation to handover. Larger palazzo terraces with wellness architecture often need six to twelve months of planning.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
