Munich rooftop terrace at golden hour with curated planting and alpine view

Why Munich is different

Alpine clarity, Bavarian discipline, and clear views to the south

Munich rooftops sit closer to the Alps than any other German metropolis. On a clear day the view south reaches the Bavarian foothills and beyond. Climate is continental with cold winters, intense alpine UV in summer and occasional Föhn events. Denkmalschutz protects significant portions of the inner city, and the Bayerische Bauordnung sets a precise regulatory baseline.

We work in this tension daily: with Bavarian Tragwerksplaner, architectural practices and Denkmalschutz consultants, and with the lifestyle expectations of Munich clients whose properties often include both city penthouses and alpine retreats. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, hardy curation, and the wellness elements (spa, sauna, outdoor kitchen) that turn a Munich roof into a year-round sanctuary with a view to the Alps.

Our Munich approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation.
  • Hardy plant palette – evergreen structure (yew, boxwood, dwarf pine, holly), four-season layers (Japanese maple, hydrangea, witch hazel), alpine-influenced accents.
  • Wellness architecture – spa, sauna and outdoor kitchen integration with alpine panorama framing.
  • Bavarian-standard execution – Tragwerksplaner engineering, Denkmalschutz consultation in heritage zones, Bauantrag submissions where required.

How a Munich project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (winter exposure, Föhn, structure, Denkmalschutz).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.

  3. 03

    Engineering and consent

Load calculations with Tragwerksplaner, Denkmalschutz consultation in heritage zones, Bauantrag submissions where required, coordination with the building's architect and interior designer.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are pre-conditioned in our Berlin nursery. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Munich?
Yes. Most of our Munich work is penthouse residences and villa roof terraces across Bogenhausen, Lehel, Grünwald, Schwabing, Altbogenhausen, Nymphenburg and Solln.
How do you handle alpine winter and Föhn?
With cold-hardy plant material, frost-proof substrate composition, Föhn-aware living screens, and materials specified for freeze-thaw cycles.
How long does a typical Munich project take?
Between three and ten months from first conversation to handover. Larger Grünwald villas with wellness architecture often need six to twelve months of planning.
