Why Paris is different

Haussmann heritage, zinc roofs, and the discipline of restraint

Paris rooftops are unlike any other European capital. The Haussmannian grid, the zinc roof geometry, and the protected silhouette of the city create a discipline of restraint that every project must respect. ABF (Architecte des Bâtiments de France) consent is required in protected zones; what works in London or Berlin will rarely pass here.

We work in this tension daily: with French architects who understand the codes of Haussmann interiors, with heritage consultants who navigate ABF dialogue, and with structural engineers who know what a 19th-century roof can carry. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, curated composition, and the wellness elements (outdoor kitchen, spa, sauna) that turn an attic terrace into a Parisian sanctuary.

Our Paris approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation. Plants stay healthy for decades.
  • Curated plant palette – evergreen structure (boxwood, yew, ilex), Mediterranean accents (olive, lavender, rosemary, citrus), seasonal layers (Japanese maple, hydrangea, wisteria, climbing roses).
  • Wellness architecture – outdoor kitchen, spa and sauna integration on tight Haussmann geometries. Acoustic privacy through living screens.
  • Heritage-aware execution – load calculations with structural engineers, ABF consent navigation, respect for the protected silhouette of Paris.

Areas we serve

Across central and west Paris

Most of our Paris work is concentrated in arrondissements with high Haussmann attic-terrace density and heritage complexity. We also handle hospitality projects in central locations.

How a Paris project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (ABF zone, structure, zinc roof geometry).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality – never a single take-it-or-leave-it.

  3. 03

    Engineering and consent

Load calculations with structural engineer, ABF pre-consultation where needed, coordination with the building's architect and interior designer.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks, depending on complexity. Plants are pre-conditioned in our Berlin nursery. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Paris?
Yes. Most of our Paris work is residential penthouses and Haussmann attic terraces across the 16e, 7e, 8e, 6e, 4e and 1er arrondissements, plus Neuilly-sur-Seine. Hospitality projects are handled separately.
How do you handle Paris-specific challenges?
We collaborate with French architects, structural engineers and ABF heritage consultants, select climate-adapted plant material, and tailor wellness elements to each Haussmann site – including listed building and protected silhouette requirements.
How long does a typical Paris project take?
Between three and nine months from first conversation to handover. Larger penthouse projects with wellness architecture often need six to twelve months of planning.
