Why Rio is different

Cidade Maravilhosa, Mata Atlântica, and the rhythm of Carioca life

Rio rooftops sit at one of the most photographed urban landscapes on earth – framed by Corcovado, Pão de Açúcar and the Atlantic, embedded in remnants of the UNESCO-recognised Mata Atlântica rainforest. Climate is tropical: hot humid weather year-round, intense UV, salt-laden ocean air, occasional tropical-storm events. The Pão de Açúcar/Corcovado Carioca Landscape is UNESCO-protected; IPHAN handles consent for heritage zones.

We work in this tension daily: with CAU-registered Brazilian architects and structural engineers, with Prefeitura and IPHAN consultants, and with the lifestyle expectations of Rio clients between Leblon beachfront penthouses, Lagoa lakeside residences and Joá/São Conrado clifftop villas. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, tropical-Brazilian curation, and the wellness elements (pool deck, outdoor kitchen, spa) that turn a Rio rooftop into a year-round sanctuary above the Cidade Maravilhosa.

Our Rio approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation in the high-rainfall regime.
  • Tropical-Brazilian palette – evergreen structure (Ficus benjamina, ipê, jaboticabeira, palms), Brazilian natives (manacá-da-serra, quaresmeira, Mata Atlântica species), flowering accents (bougainvillea, jacaranda, hibiscus, frangipani), shade-tolerant layers.
  • Wellness architecture – pool deck, spa and outdoor kitchen integration with Corcovado, Pão de Açúcar or Atlantic framing.
  • Heritage-aware execution – CAU-registered Brazilian architects and structural engineers, Prefeitura do Rio permitting, IPHAN consultation where required.

How a Rio project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (tropical humidity, salt, heritage, structure).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.

  3. 03

    Engineering and permitting

Load calculations with CAU-registered structural engineer, Prefeitura do Rio permitting, IPHAN consultation where required.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from Brazilian and Mata Atlântica nurseries and pre-conditioned for the Carioca climate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Rio?
Yes. Most of our Rio work is Leblon and Ipanema beachfront penthouses, Lagoa lakeside residences, Joá and São Conrado clifftop villas, and Barra da Tijuca high-rise estates.
How do you handle tropical humidity and salt?
With tropical-Brazilian plant material, drainage engineered for high-rainfall regimes, salt-tolerant material specification and mycorrhizal soil partnerships that resist nutrient leaching.
How long does a typical Rio project take?
Between four and ten months from first conversation to handover. Larger Joá or São Conrado clifftop villas often need six to twelve months of planning.
