Why Tallinn is different

Baltic capital, UNESCO Vanalinn, and the tech-startup HNWI tradition

Tallinn is the Baltic tech capital and one of the most digitally advanced governments in the world, with one of Europe's best-preserved medieval centres. Vanalinn is UNESCO-protected; Pirita and Kakumäe form the contemporary coastal villa belt; Nõmme preserves the historic garden-city villa tradition; Kadriorg holds the heritage palace district. Climate is humid continental Baltic – cool short summers, very cold long winters, Baltic storm wind, salt-laden Gulf air, deep snow loads.

We work in this tension daily: with EAL-registered architects and structural engineers, with Tallinna Linnavalitsus and Muinsuskaitseamet consultants, and with the lifestyle expectations of Tallinn clients between Vanalinn townhouses, Pirita beachfront, Nõmme villas, Kadriorg palaces, Kakumäe coastal estates, Viimsi peninsula villas and Rocca al Mare west-coast properties. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, Baltic boreal curation, and the wellness elements (sunset terrace, outdoor kitchen, sauna pavilion, fire pit) that turn a Tallinn rooftop into a year-round sanctuary.

Our Tallinn approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation under Baltic winter, snow load and salt-spray.
  • Baltic boreal palette – structural specimens (Scots pine, Norway spruce, birch, alder, rowan), Baltic evergreens (juniper, yew, dwarf pine, boxwood), flowering accents (rugosa rose, lupin, peony, lilac), Baltic perennials, Estonian summer-cottage plants.
  • Wellness architecture – sunset terrace, outdoor kitchen, sauna pavilion and fire pit integration with Gulf of Finland or forest framing.
  • UNESCO- and snow-aware execution – EAL architects and structural engineers, Tallinna Linnavalitsus permitting, Muinsuskaitseamet heritage consent, snow-load and Baltic-storm-rated detailing.

How a Tallinn project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (Linnavalitsus, Muinsuskaitseamet UNESCO, snow load, Baltic storm).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.

  3. 03

    Engineering and approvals

Load calculations with Estonian-licensed structural engineer, Tallinna Linnavalitsus permitting, Muinsuskaitseamet heritage consent.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks, ideally between May and September. Plants are sourced from Baltic and northern European nurseries and pre-conditioned for the Tallinn climate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Tallinn?
Yes. Most of our Tallinn work is Vanalinn, Pirita, Nõmme, Kadriorg, Kakumäe and Viimsi.
How do you handle Baltic storm wind and deep snow?
With Baltic-storm-rated planters, cold-hardy boreal plant material, snow-load detailing, and Estonian sauna-pavilion integration for year-round use.
How long does a typical Tallinn project take?
Between five and fourteen months from first conversation to handover. Larger Pirita or Viimsi coastal estates often need eight to fourteen months.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
