Why Vienna is different

Imperial heritage, continental climate, and the Bundesdenkmalamt

Vienna rooftops sit above one of the most coherent imperial cityscapes in Europe. The Innere Stadt is a UNESCO World Heritage zone; much of Döbling, Hietzing and the inner Bezirke fall under Bundesdenkmalamt protection. Climate is continental – winters cold enough to test plant hardiness, summers warm enough to allow Mediterranean accents in protected courtyards. Every project is a negotiation between ambition and heritage discipline.

We work in this tension daily: with Austrian Ziviltechniker and Baumeister, with architectural practices who navigate Bundesdenkmalamt consent, and with the lifestyle expectations of Vienna clients who already live inside one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, hardy curation, and the wellness elements (spa, sauna, outdoor kitchen) that turn a Vienna roof into a year-round sanctuary above the rooftops of the empire.

Our Vienna approach

Curated plants, ecological substrate, lifestyle integration

  • Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation.
  • Hardy plant palette – evergreen structure (yew, boxwood, dwarf pine, holly), four-season layers (Japanese maple, hydrangea, wisteria, ornamental grasses) and Mediterranean accents in protected microclimates.
  • Wellness architecture – spa, sauna and outdoor kitchen integration with imperial skyline framing.
  • Heritage-aware execution – Ziviltechniker structural engineering, Bundesdenkmalamt consultation in heritage zones, Einreichplan submissions where required.

How a Vienna project unfolds

From first conversation to handover

  1. 01

    Understanding before drawing

Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (heritage zone, winter exposure, structure, microclimate).

  2. 02

    Concept and curation

A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.

  3. 03

    Engineering and consent

Load calculations with Ziviltechniker, Bundesdenkmalamt consultation in heritage zones, Einreichplan submissions where required, coordination with the building's architect and interior designer.

  4. 04

    Installation and handover

Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are pre-conditioned in our Berlin nursery and regional Austrian nurseries. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.

Frequently asked

What clients usually want to know first

Do you work on rooftop terrace projects in Vienna?
Yes. Most of our Vienna work is Gründerzeit penthouses and palace roof terraces across the Innere Stadt, Döbling, Hietzing, Wieden, Josefstadt and Währing.
How do you handle Bundesdenkmalamt heritage consent?
With early Bundesdenkmalamt consultation in protected zones, Ziviltechniker engineering, and material specification that respects the imperial skyline.
How long does a typical Vienna project take?
Between three and ten months from first conversation to handover. Larger palace terraces with wellness architecture often need six to twelve months of planning.

The first call is unhurried – understanding before any concept. We travel from Berlin for site visits when the project warrants it.
