Hong Kong rooftops sit on some of the most vertical real estate in the world. Subtropical humidity year-round, typhoon events that test every detail, intense UV, and the Buildings Department permitting regime that demands Authorised Persons sign off on structural changes. Each microclimate – The Peak ridge, Mid-Levels slope, Repulse Bay shore, Sai Kung coast – behaves differently.
We work in this tension daily: with HK-registered structural engineers, Authorised Persons and landscape architects who navigate the Buildings Department, and with the lifestyle expectations of clients living above the city. Our role is the plant and outdoor lifestyle layer – ecological substrate, subtropical curation, and the wellness elements (spa, outdoor kitchen, sauna) that turn a Hong Kong roof into a year-round sanctuary.

- Symbiosis methodology – mycorrhizal partnerships, effective microorganisms and humus building replace chemical fertilisation under the high-rainfall regime.
- Subtropical palette – foliage (Alocasia, Philodendron, ferns), flowering accents (bougainvillea, frangipani, hibiscus), structural specimens (Ficus, palms, Hong Kong orchid tree).
- Wellness architecture – spa, sauna and outdoor kitchen integration on tight rooftop geometries with harbour and South China Sea views.

From first conversation to handover

Understanding before drawing
Site visit (or detailed remote survey for first conversations from Berlin), discussion of the people and rhythm using the terrace, early constraint mapping (typhoon, sun path, salt exposure, structure).

Concept and curation
A small set of plant compositions, material moodboards, wellness element placement. Always optionality.
- 03
Engineering and submissions
Load calculations with HK-registered structural engineer, Buildings Department submissions via Authorised Persons, coordination with the building's architect and interior designer.

Installation and handover
Our team installs on site over one to several weeks. Plants are sourced from regional South-East Asian nurseries and pre-conditioned for the project's microclimate. After handover we offer ongoing care subscriptions following the same symbiosis methodology.
